Learning to Draw, with a Little Help from Mom

jennifer · December 15, 2011 · 5 Comments

When I was little, I used to love to draw. I had a sketch pad, and I would just look at things and try to copy what was in front of me.
I would try to draw anything. Objects around me. Album covers. Whatever caught my eye. I got pretty good at drawing by studying how things looked from different angles and trying to mimic shading.
I keep thinking that I will renew that love of drawing some day. Alas, most of my creative work involves a computer now.
I think of this now because I see my oldest son, G, develop his artwork. I’m not sure he’s going to be the most creative one in the family – Biz is pretty imaginative – but it’s stunning how much his artwork has progressed over the past year. At 6, I suppose it is to be expected. Here’s an example some of his latest work.
lightning mcqueenPretty impressive drawing of Lightning McQueen from Cars, if you ask me, especially considering it’s from a 6 year old. G drew it freehand, using one of his cars as a model. I gave him some direction on how to look at it, break it down and draw it. But it’s his work. He got a big frustrated near the end. (He’s like me. He wants everything to come out perfect the first time around.) But, he stuck with it and finished the drawing.
Another piece of artwork for framing.
{end motherly doting here}
Are you moved by your kids’ artwork? Tell me I’m not alone.

    Holy cow – that’s pretty amazing for a 6 year-old! My 7 year-old has never really liked drawing/coloring/writing, so it’s always a struggle to get him to be creative on paper. My 2 year-old on the other hand, can’t get enough of the crayons, so I guess there’s hope!

      I’m pretty proud of him. He’s been coming up with some pretty cool designs lately. Kind of reminds me of me when I was little! Makes me miss drawing. Need to pull out the sketch book again.

    I love the artwork. My kids often don’t finish anything, so I have half finished pictures. Wish I knew a better way to save/organize these things…
    Also commenting to tell you that I tagged you in an award post – The Versatile Blogger Award. I’m told these are just fun little things to do, and since I’m new I thought I’d try to keep it going just once (good practice for learning how to insert links etc. anyway!).
