When I was little, I used to love to draw. I had a sketch pad, and I would just look at things and try to copy what was in front of me.
I would try to draw anything. Objects around me. Album covers. Whatever caught my eye. I got pretty good at drawing by studying how things looked from different angles and trying to mimic shading.
I keep thinking that I will renew that love of drawing some day. Alas, most of my creative work involves a computer now.
I think of this now because I see my oldest son, G, develop his artwork. I’m not sure he’s going to be the most creative one in the family – Biz is pretty imaginative – but it’s stunning how much his artwork has progressed over the past year. At 6, I suppose it is to be expected. Here’s an example some of his latest work.
Pretty impressive drawing of Lightning McQueen from Cars, if you ask me, especially considering it’s from a 6 year old. G drew it freehand, using one of his cars as a model. I gave him some direction on how to look at it, break it down and draw it. But it’s his work. He got a big frustrated near the end. (He’s like me. He wants everything to come out perfect the first time around.) But, he stuck with it and finished the drawing.
Another piece of artwork for framing.
{end motherly doting here}
Are you moved by your kids’ artwork? Tell me I’m not alone.
