Today, I attended the Social Media FTW Fall Conference in Portland, Maine. It was my third year in a row attending, and I think probably the best so far (for me, anyway).
When I go to these conferences, I tend to take lots of notes and then only glance back at them once or twice after the fact. Today, I felt like I left with some good nuggets of information to help me and my Writing Lab clients with branding and advanced social media marketing efforts.
Being a writer, and a creative person in general, I am always inspired by well put together words. Here are the words and quotes that stuck out most in my mind and in my little orange notebook.
From Mike Volpe, CMO @ Hubspot:
Content makes you interesting.
Your brand is what your customers say it is.
Grow your brand by cultivation, not control.
(re: social media) Don’t dip your toe in the water. Jump in all the way!
You will never be smarter than Google.
From Elijah R Young, Fandura:
Collect content when it happens.
You’re not going to be the first to market.
Saying “I don’t know what to write” means your customers don’t have any more problems to solve.
If you can’t think of anything to write, then you’re not reading enough.
It’s not about getting more readers, it’s about getting those who do come to get you more readers.
Ignore what the gurus are saying. Pay attention to what they are doing.
From Jaica Kinsman, Executive Producer for MaineToday Digital:
Be a human being! (on your Facebook business page)
From Saul Colt, Head of Magic at Freshbooks:
Always be inspired, never be influenced.
All ideas must make people laugh, think, cry.
If you can’t or don’t feel like competing on other people’s terms…just change the rules.
You can’t be silly without substance.
Of course, these are coming from the workshops I attended. There were many others going on as well.
Were you at the Social Media FTW Fall Conference? What quotes / words / thoughts / ideas stood out for you?
