RawSpiceBar is a subscription box that delivers 3 freshly ground, exotic and global flavors from around the world for $6/month. Each box includes 3 kitchen-tested recipes along with explanation on the origin and history of spices from that region.
The company was started after Rebecca Myers spent time working with smallholder farmers across West Africa in everything from chili peppers to seeds of all types. “I found there was a huge disconnect between freshly sourced (and ground) spices at source versus consumption,” explained Rebecca. “Also a huge difference in flavor versus the pre ground stuff at the grocery store! We really wanted to bridge that gap for consumers and that’s how RawSpiceBar was born.”
Rebecca also wanted to keep the spices affordable and accessible, hence the $6 monthly price point. Each month, RawSpiceBar tells a story of spices and flavors from a different culinary region.
According to Rebecca, RawSpiceBar ensures the authenticity of each of its flavors and dishes by collaborating with chefs who have an expertise in one specific region or geography. Past spice boxes have included Istanbul, Navajo and Japanese. I received a Norwegian-themed box that included gravalax spices, winter herbs and gingerbread spices.
A few things about RawSpiceBar:
- The spices are whole toasted, ground and blended just a few days before they ship directly to your door so you can have your spices the way you have your coffee (fresh!).
- Each of the blends are perfectly portioned to create a dish serving 8-12. The recipes are kitchen tested and almost always will include an option for vegans, carnivores and vegetarians.
- The blends are from old family recipes or curated chefs, so you can explore new spice blends from experts all year long.
RawSpiceBar also tries to source organic and fair trade wherever it can. The flavor pouches contain only the ingredients listed on each blend with no added fillers such as MSG, salt, rice, sugar or flour.
You can feel good about buying and consuming RawSpiceBar products.
Disclosure: I received the December RawSpiceBar box for free which inspired the writing of this post. The opinions and words are all mine.
