My Black Friday

jennifer · November 23, 2012 · 9 Comments

I noted in more than one post that I had no desire to participate in Black Friday.
In fact, I encouraged you to skip Black Friday and Cyber Tuesday and celebrate #GivingTuesday. (Though I did create a gifts that give back guide in case you decided to start shopping from home.)
Instead of getting up early – or not going to sleep at all – we went for a nice family hike at the Blackstone River and Canal Heritage State Park in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. We were visiting my parents with the whole clan, including our 3 dogs, so we thought an outdoor trek was perfect for the day after Thanksgiving.
This was our view on Black Friday:

I have to confess that I did make one purchase on Friday. After my boys were in bed, my husband and I drove down the street to the Hess gas station and picked up two of the collectible Hess trucks that come out every holiday season. It’s become a tradition in our house for the boys to receive these collectible vehicles, and we don’t have a Hess station near us in Maine. (FYI, this year they have a helicopter and rescue truck. Very cool.)

How did you spend your Black Friday?

Such beautiful pictures!!!!! Family was still in town so the house was filled with cousins running around laughing and playing as I fed the masses their meals and chatted with my sisters. In the afternoon we ventured out and did some shopping…sorry! It’s kind of our tradition EVERY time she comes! Boy, it was crazy even in the afternoon! We didn’t last long shopping, but enjoyed a lovely conversation at dinner out… while the hubbies made frozen pizza for the kids back at home. HA! SO worth getting out. 🙂

Sounds like a great Friday, despite the crowds. Nothing like some good family time!

Oddly enough, or perhaps not oddly at all, our Black Friday looked like yours. We went geocaching in Horseshoe Bend Park, an area of my county that was recently preserved. Lots of huge trees still down over the trail, but we had a fabulous time anyway. I live in Shopping Central near an outlet mall, and you couldn’t pay me enough to go there most days … ESPECIALLY Black Friday. Good for you for skipping it!

I’ve never been geocaching. It sounds like fun.
I hate shopping year round, so the thought of Black Friday gives me anxiety!

Gorgeous pics! I agree about Black Friday too, I support the retail industry but things have gone too far. I feel a bit embarassed for our country when I see those videos of the craziness. I did make two online purchases that day for gifts from a Maui handmade jewelry artisan but I barely left home the whole weekend. Wrote all my posts for the week and just kicked back.
The truck thing sounds cool! I love litte car stuff, chevron used to do great ones too.

Sounds like a great way to spend the weekend. I always enjoy your posts about the local Maui shops or the great Etsy finds (even ones in Maine!). Certainly a better way to shop than the big box stores!

Awesome!! I spent Black Friday driving through the Catskills to a small used bookshop. While I technically did make a purchase (gasp!), it was only for a few used books – no new items were handled, I swear! I was participating in Small Business Saturday a day early… (can you tell I feel slightly guilty?)

I know. I felt guilty buying the Hess trucks. Sounds like a great Black Friday to me, and used books at a local store are always a good buy!
