Philanthropy Friday: Celebrating Women on International Women's Day

jennifer · March 8, 2013 · 16 Comments

Each Friday, the another jennifer blog shares stories of those who incorporate philanthropy into their everyday lives – personally and professionally – in a creative and unique way. If you have a story you’d like to share, please contact Jennifer.

International Women's Day

I’m changing things up a bit for today’s Philanthropy Friday.
Typically, I feature a person or a company that gives back in a creative and unique way.
Today, I’m featuring more than 3 billion people.
Women.
Because, honestly, who gives back on a regular basis more than a woman?
We are mothers, sisters, aunts, best friends, teachers, entrepreneurs, CEOS, assistants, nurses, organizers, fundraisers, advocates, makers, believers. The list goes on and on.
Often, we give without thinking about ourselves. We kiss boo boos. We sacrifice careers. We put our needs last.
Today is International Women’s Day.
As I write this blog post on my 27″ iMac in my home office while my kids are in school and daycare, I am aware of how lucky I am to be where I am today. A place where I could not be had it not been for some amazing women ahead of me and some amazing women who have been kind enough to share their knowledge with me.
There is still work to be done. Who are we kidding? Women are not equal to men in this world. Before writing this post, I attended a local luncheon for businesswomen where the keynote topic was “The Power of a Woman’s Voice – How to Ask for What You Want.”
I often stop and think to myself “Why do we have to have these conversations?” As far as I know, men aren’t gathering to talk about how to ask for what they want.
But we do need to have these conversations.
And we need to embrace who we are as women and keep moving forward.

“Well-behaved women seldom make history.” ~Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

Today, I’d like to thank all those women ahead of me who stood strong and carved a place for me in this modern world. Take a look at this video and see what some innovative working women have given us.

Now if only we could get a day off for this women’s day.
Nah. There’s too much work to be done.
How will you celebrate International Women’s Day?
I wrote this post as part of the Global Team of 200, a highly specialized group of Mom Bloggers for Social Good members who focus on maternal health, children, hunger, and women and girls.

Great post! As the mom of boys, I believe a big step toward female equality is raising this generation of future men to see women as true partners in this global world.

I went over to see some family last night and we played this game called, “The Worst Case Scenario Survival Game” – men against women. The women won and they said, “we let you win because it’s International Women’s Day.” HAHA…no, we won because we always have to be on our toes…for whatever scenario. Hehe.

I Love that quote from Laurel Thatcher Ulrich. And you are so right – we owe our freedoms to so many brave women who came before us who fought for them. We are so very lucky and we can never take that for granted.

Absolutely, Ilene. It’s so easy to forget the struggles women had before us.

I love this! “Because, honestly, who gives back on a regular basis more than a woman?” No ONE!!! We are selfless and dynamic and still maintain our fly! Lol. Visting from SITS.
