So I’m posting my first vlog – or video blog – today.
It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a little while now, and one of Mama Kat’s vlogging prompts spoke to me.
Why would a writer vlog? Because when I watch other bloggers vlog – like Fadra at all.things.fadra or Tracy at SellabitMum or Mama Kat herself – I feel like I get to know the blogger in a more personal way.
It’s kind of nice to see a blogger’s personality. Plus, vlogs can be really fun.
I’m responding to the prompt: Congratulations, you’ve got a book deal! Tell us what you would write about.
If you know about my one huge goal for 2013, then you know why this prompt spoke to me.
Oh, and if the whole philanthropy writing thing doesn’t work out for me, I have a back up plan.
Watch the video.
What do you think? Do you want to see me vlog more?
I think it’s a bit long, but I can work on that. Feedback is appreciated!

[…] week, I posted my first vlog. You were all so supportive of my efforts that I decided to vlog again this […]
I hope everything works out for you! I’ve been thinking of collaborating with my daughter for a few years now (since she was 4). She actually writes her own books now and staples them together. Thinking I’m just going to be her editor at this point!
Congrats on your first vlog! Keep it up!! One tip: look at the camera, not the screen. Your blog length was great (I shoot for under 2:30 for mine since I tend to lose interest in vlogs that are longer).
That’s so cute. And great idea to let her do the writing and be her editor!
Thank so much for the tips. I think 2:30 or under is a great length to strive for. And I will work on looking at the camera. I might use my laptop next time. I was on my 27″ iMac and it’s all screen!
Loved your vlog it’s nice to see you and hear you! I can see either of your book ideas becoming a reality. I’m sure you’ll make the right choice. Do you know Kenya over at Here’s the thing? She wrote about her son Christopher in her books. I just purchased the second book, it’s adorable.
Thanks, Jen. I will have to check Kenya’s blog and her book out. Sounds very cool.
You did great for your first vlog. It’s a great idea to write down your son’s stories. Make sure you don’t vary from what he says and maybe add some of his drawings with it. It would be something you would treasure forever and bribe him with when he wants to take the car.
That sounds like a great idea, Miriam. It would be a pretty funny book. He’s got quite the imagination. Thanks for the kind words about my first vlog!
Yay! I love your vlog! I LOVE your hair! I can’t wait too see all the good things that happen for you this year! Hey, maybe you can do 2 books – 1 philanthropy and 1 with your son – who knows????
Sounds like a great idea! And thanks for your encouragement. (I think I need to get some new pics for my website too.)
Jennifer,
Good job! I think the vlog thing might not happen for me until 2014.
Love the idea of the stories by your boy … it’d be cool if he illustrated them too. I’d get one! Only if it was also autographed.
I think I can arrange an autographed copy for you. Just this once.
Yay!! So glad you’re participating and I totally agree, I think video does give readers a new, fun perspective. Keep it up!
I love your vlogs, Kat, so I was excited when you began your vlogging workshop. I’ve wanted to do it for a while, so I decided to just jump on in! Looking forward to doing more. Thanks for watching!
You did a great job with your vlog… I wish you all the best in your journey of writing your book.
Thanks so much, Jen!
How fun to see your face and hear you talk!!! Such a fantastic idea to write your book on something you are passionate about. I love your purpose, Jennifer. Keep up the great work!! 🙂
Thank you, as per usual, Chris. Keep encouraging me. It motivates me!
This was great! It is making me think about doing this as well, but me on camera, er, probably not so good 🙂
Your book idea sounds cool. Hope everything is coming along well and that you get a book deal!
Thanks, Sylvia. I have been thinking about vlogging for a while, so I thought I’d try it out in 2013. It’s kind of fun!
Great first vlog!!!! You did an amazing job!!! I will read that book, so get to writing it!!!
Thanks so much, Theresa. And that’s what I need to hear. I did some writing today!
I never thought of vlogs. You’ve opened a whole new avenue for me as an author. I hope you write the book and when it’s published you post about it.
That’s great to hear, Vicki. I will definitely post more about the book. I hope it gets published. Gotta get some writing done!
{Melinda} Good job! You have a very warm, engaging personality, Jennifer. Humorous and real. My blogging partner have done one vlog, with the intent to do more, but it just hasn’t happened yet. Writing comes much more naturally to me! We are also working on a book proposal — and just got an agent! Yea! Hoping 2013 will be a year of realizing literary dreams for both of us! 🙂
Awesome! I think it’s going to be a great literary year for us!
Thanks for the kind words. I definitely love writing, but I thought a vlog might be fun every now and then. We’ll see where it goes. Good luck to you!
Yes, keep vlogging and like someone else said, just look more up. Other than that you did wonderful and I hope the book deal works out well.
~Naila Moon
Thanks, Naila. I will remember to look up next time. I appreciate the feedback!
What a fun way to get to know a blogger through a vlog! Love it. I just started Google + Hangout with some friends and the advice I was given was look up at the camera so it looks like you’re looking at us more. Great job!
Thanks, Ashley. I’ll be working on looking up more next time!
Jennifer I loved it! You are right, it is really neat to actually see the personality of the person behind the blog I visit so often! You are funny and refreshing and great on camera! I am inspired to also try the vlogging challenge one of these days! Great job, and I look forward to hearing more about your book or books!
Thanks so much, Alexa! There’s a good prompt this week, so I may try to vlog this week as well.
Good for you! I still haven’t come anywhere close to working up the courage to vlog. It’s so great to see how you are “live” since I’ve read a bunch of your blog posts. Looking forward to watching more of your vlog posts.
Thanks, Bev. It’s one of those things you just have to try out to see if it’s for you. Vlogging is pretty fun!
