When we start a blog, we don’t always know where it’s going to lead us. Will it be a place we share our daily struggles, triumphs or pictures of our kids? Will it be a place that people come and engage, share and spread like crazy? Or will it just be our moms and best friends reading?
Some of us know from the start that we want our blog to be a business. A place for us to share our writing, but also cultivate a source of income.
As you know from following my journey, sometimes a blog grows and changes in ways we never expected. Like my Philanthropy Friday series that eventually led me to write my book, Simple Giving.
Throughout the process, we bloggers form tribes, participate in linkies, attend conferences, whatever we can do to learn about the ins and outs of growing our blog. And if we’re lucky, we’re able to earn a viable income from our site. Or at least have a nice dinner out every now and then.
But there is a LOT of work that goes into turning a blog into a business. Who knew we’d have to know about things like SEO, marketing, PR, the technical workings of a blog and so much more? During the process, we become businesswomen (and men), though we don’t always realize it.
We may not have a background in any of the things mentioned above. We may know nothing about managing finances, working with contractors, graphic design or the technical aspects of keeping a blog running. Throw in things like business structures and taxes, and it becomes even more overwhelming.
My friend Alexa Bigwarfe is also a blogger turned businesswoman. (She’s been featured on this site on several occasions.) She found that there there’s a ton of stuff that goes along with being a writer/blogger/entrepreneur that she wasn’t trained in and had to learn through much trial and error.
Somewhere along the line, Alexa decided that writers like us needed a good education in all of these elements, especially in the areas of mindset, business/tech tools and the various ways to make money from your writing and blogging.
