Darth Mater, Dinosaurs Making Dynamite and Life without Questions

jennifer · June 7, 2012 · 3 Comments

The other morning Biz asked me, “Mommy, do dinosaurs make dynamite?”
What? I first thought. Then, I realized the song “Dynamite” was on the radio.
I proceeded to explain what the word dynamite actually means, noting the difference between a stick of dynamite and describing something that’s pretty awesome (as in the case of the song). Despite my explanation, he decided that dinosaurs must have some sort of involvement with the word. Why wouldn’t they? I mean, the word sounds like dino-might. And dinosaurs are pretty awesome.
This made me think, what if we didn’t have people around (or Google) to answer our questions and straighten things out? Then, we’d just make our own conclusions.
Biz is 3, and his thought process is pretty straight forward. He’s using what he knows from his short experience on this planet to come to the conclusion that dinosaurs and dynamite are somehow related.
It’s the same reason he calls Darth Vader of Star Wars “Darth Mater.” His reference point is the movie Cars. One that he’s much more familiar with than Star Wars. Mater is one of the main characters. Vader doesn’t make sense because he’s never heard that word before and has no reference point.
Biz also calls lightsabers “light savers.” I can only correct the kid so many times. Lightsaber just doesn’t make sense to him. He’ll have to learn later on in life, when he’s ready.
Remember that song “Secret Agent Man?” I totally thought they were saying “Secret Asian Man.” I had very little knowledge of secret agents when I was younger, but I was aware of Asians. I always thought it sounded a bit racist, but it was a good tune. It wasn’t until much later in life that I realized they were saying secret agent. It was kind of a relief actually.
But I never thought to ask.
Do other people think these things?

Using background knowledge to make sense is a sign of someone who wants to learn and make sense of the world! 🙂 I need to remember this post when I try to make sense of some of the things I hear my little one saying!

It is, Melissa. I love it when my kids come out with these things. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out at first, but if you go back and think about their reference points, you can see their line of thinking. So fun and interesting!
