Capturing the #EssenceOfCool During Hot Outdoor Summer Workouts

jennifer · June 29, 2015 · 7 Comments

Disclosure: I received an Arctic Cove Bucket Top Misting Fan which I gave to WolfPack Fitness and inspired the writing of this post. The opinions and words are all mine. The photos and video are all Luke Robinson, my trainer.
“I could never do what you do.”
“Doesn’t it hurt?”
“I can’t handle an outdoor workout in the dead of winter.”
“Why would you drive 45 minutes for a workout?”
“Isn’t it dangerous to be barefoot?”
These are the funny comments I hear about my gym, WolfPack Fitness.
I’ve written about my not so traditional gym before. I actually wrote about Luke’s penchant for giving before I even joined.
I use the term “joined” loosely because this isn’t the type of place where you sign a contract. You simply choose to show up and work on becoming stronger inside and out. We use weight – like cinderblocks and logs – not weights. We do “alternative cardio” – smashing tires with sledgehammers and whipping chains – instead of treadmills and elliptical runners. There are free hugs at the end of every workout, and we tell each other we love each other. A lot. We’re a supportive group, no matter who walks down the long driveway.
There are no doors at WolfPack Fitness because it’s an outdoor gym, which means we deal with whatever Mother Nature throws us on a workout day. Snow, rain, sweltering heat. We brave it all. So far, no one has melted or frozen.
When the elements are a bit extreme – it is Maine after all – we use an unheated barn. If it’s super cold, we add layers of clothes, though I made it through an entire Maine winter working out without leaving a jacket on. It gets warm fast when you work out the way we do, which is why drinking water and doing what you can to cool off is key as the weather gets warmer. This will be my first summer working out at WolfPack Fitness and, honestly, I’m more concerned about the heat than sub-zero temperatures.
That’s why when my friend Michelle at A Dish of Daily Life blogged about Arctic Cove, I knew WolfPack needed to have a Bucket Top Misting Fan. This amazing fan fits onto a 5-gallon Home Depot bucket. You can either fill the bucket with water or attach a hose to the fan, flip a couple of switches and you’ve got instant coolness.

The Arctic Cove Bucket Top Misting Fan was a big hit at our Ladies Lifting Night!

The bucket top mister sure beats the tiny handheld misting fans we were using to cool off with.
Since we already use the Home Depot buckets filled with bricks and other weight for farmers walks, we were ready for the fan when it arrived. The fan is powered by an 18V lithium-ion battery and comes with a 6 hour charger. The best part is that we can take our fan and our 5-gallon bucket on Luke’s pontoon boat and head on over for an island workout and keep cool the entire time. (Did I mention my gym is also on a river?)
I had the chance to test out the Bucket Top Misting Fan during my small group workout session on Friday morning. While it wasn’t a super hot day, it was humid and the workouts make me sweat pretty quickly. The mist from the fan was a welcome addition to our space.
Walking lunges with a 1/2 cinder block are more fun when you are getting cooled down by a misting fan.

If you want see the fan and me in action, here’s a video (also embedded below) that was posted to Instagram. You can see our unique gym equipment in the background. Oh, and in case you were wondering about the answers to the questions at the beginning of this post: Yes, you can. No, it doesn’t. If I can, so can you. Because there is no other place on the planet like this. Not at all – nothing beats a barefoot outdoor workout in the summer, especially in front of an Arctic Cove Bucket Top Misting Fan!
Visit Arctic Cove’s website to see all their cool products.

Do you work out outside? How do you keep cool?

This makes me so happy! I loved Michelle’s post so much and entered to win. (fingers crossed)
Our central air broke a few weeks ago and I haven’t been the same since. Cassidy and Scarlet garden all day long in the heat, and he pushes a mower around too. If I don’t win, I’m definitely going to need to get one for the family. And then I’m going to hug my Arctic Cove, because I know I already love it.

The misting fan would be perfect for gardening too! You can just throw it on a bucket and take it wherever you need to be cool. Pretty awesome.
