A Stroll Down Maine Street, Brunswick

jennifer · July 22, 2013 · 37 Comments

If you follow this blog or my posts on social media, you know I love where I live.
Brunswick, Maine  is a great place to live for so many reasons. I am fortunate enough to live one block from Maine Street, which means I can walk just about anywhere. I can walk to get groceries, get my haircut, eat at amazing restaurants, shop for clothes or sustainable goods, catch a movie or a theatrical production, go bowling, listen to music, meet a client for coffee, or buy antiques.
I am reminded of why I live in my town every time I walk down the street. Rather than explain it all in words, I thought I would take you for a stroll down Maine Street, Brunswick through pictures.

Maine Street Brunswick is colorful and vibrant.

Brunswick boasts the widest main street in Maine. With several crosswalks along the way, it's very pedestrian (and dog!) friendly.

The architecture is very cool. Many of the buildings are over 100 years old. I’ve always liked the Bank of America building.

You never know what you'll find in Brunswick. Even the side streets have hidden treasures.

With so many restaurant options, it’s hard to choose where to eat.

All the stores, restaurants and coffee shops have fun signs out in the summer.

You can find a farmer's market on Tuesdays and Fridays on the Brunswick Mall in the summer and concerts in the gazebo on Wednesday evenings. In the winter, the town floods the mall and creates an ice rink.

It's not Maine if there isn't lobstah!
Of course, it wouldn’t be Maine without lobstah!

This is all just the tip of the iceberg. I took these photos during a short walk on a very hot summer day. You really have to visit to experience the awesomeness of my town.

I used to live in a walking town and I loved it – except there were a few chain stores there. Brunswick definitely seems more “local” than mine. And so pretty. And I’m jealous you can walk to bowling. Everyone should be able to do that!

Brunswick (and Maine, in general) likes to keep things local. The walkable bowling is candlepin bowling, just like the small lanes I grew up with in Massachusetts!

Wow, what a great town, you are lucky indeed! Think I’ll come visit. 🙂 I’ve never been to Maine. We went to Boston a few years ago and I wanted to go to Connecticut to find the town that Star’s Hollow, where the Gilmore Girls are set, was based on. I imagine it to be a lot like your town.

I’ve never seen Gilmore Girls, but I can say Brunswick is a nice, quaint New England town. You should definitely come up to visit!

Old cities and towns have so much character. I too live in an old one. Orillia, where I live was the first municipality in North America to own its own hydro electric power. Lots of great history here. I love going on walks here in the downtown core. So many great shops and restaurants.
If I ever make it to Brunswick I’d love to check out The Crabby Lobstah.

That’s so cool, Susan! I love learning the histories of old towns. The Crabby Lobstah is new. Just a lobsterman who sells his catch. Doesn’t get much fresher!

We have a “cool as a moose” tie-dye t-shirt for my daughter. You know how I feel about this, Jennifer. Well I hope you do since you know I love Maine. I do live in an amazing town. Northampton, MA. Know it? I know you were very close recently. It has a downtown like this – irresistible stores and stopes and food to eat. We used to live a mile away and it was walking distance, and the mile back was uphill pushing a stroller and that’s how I lost baby weight. We’re actually on the same street, but now four miles from downtown. And we live closer to two other town’s downtowns. Somehow.

How nice Jennifer. It has the perfect small town vibe and I can see why you love it so much. My town is teeny weeny. A bank, a small grocery, library, car repair garage, ice-cream store, drug store, hair place, gas station, tire repair, dollar store and fire station and one stop sign.
Not much but we love it!

Hey! A good friend of mine lives in Brunswick and told me such wonderful things about it. She’s been trying to get me to come up and visit forever. I need to make the trip. It does sound pretty great. I live in the complete opposite of a small town – NYC. haha but I love the idea of living in a small town.

You should definitely come up, Christine! Brunswick is much bigger to me than the town I grew up in (population 20k vs 7k), but it’s no comparison to NYC. Heck, the entire state of Maine only has 1 million people in it! The nice thing is that we can get to Boston and NYC pretty easy from here.

You’re a heckuva tour guide, Jennifer. I miss the days when Charlotte had more small-town appeal. There’s a reason I like to take the family to any town but here for Independence Day. In smaller towns, holidays are a community event and family friendly.
Charlotte’s gotten so big, the big holidays are huge events that cater more to fistfights and binge drinking than tossing down a blanket and relaxing.
(I’d try a new restaurant on that street every day at lunch. Every.day.)

You know what, Eli? You could totally try a new restaurant every day for several weeks. And you’d get a ton of good food, from Vietnamese to organic pizza. So good!
Summer holidays are the best in a small town. No doubt.

Gawd I love Maine Street! Having attended and graduated from Brunswick High School (the old one), I love getting back down there. 🙂 We visited the flea market a few months ago and stopped at that circus restaurant. I forget the name. I really wanted some Frosty’s!

Big Top Deli! I ate there yesterday. And Frosty’s is pretty much a staple for us on Sundays. No one makes better donuts. No one. Let me know the next time you’re in the area! We definitely need to meet up at some point in August, somewhere.

I lived in Brunswick Maine for four years when i was a child. My father was in the Navy and stationed at Bath. Friends of our family owned People and Pets on Maine Street near the Great Impasta. Does anyone know if it is still there or what happened to it. Their names were Betsy and Barb.
