Take Back Thanksgiving and Respect the Bird!

jennifer · November 12, 2011 ·

Apparently, Nordstrom and me aren’t the only ones that believe in celebrating one holiday at a time. I’ve recently discovered Respect the Bird, where people are pledging to take back Thanksgiving.
This grassroots effort to keep Thanksgiving from being an afterthought came from an Allrecipes.com blog post last year. Now, there’s a website, Twitter acount and Facebook page for Respect the Bird.
It’s ridiculous that people are hanging their Christmas decorations and playing holiday music when we haven’t even finished our Halloween candy.
I admit that I am not a big fan of Thanksgiving dinner. I don’t like turkey, could care less about candied yams and I really, really hate pie. (Sorry) I do, however, love the idea of getting together with family, watching football and reflecting on all the things in my life I am thankful for.
According to Allrecipes.com, Thanksgiving dinner is the most celebrated holiday meal with 71% of Americans planning to prepare the traditional meal this year. Sitting down to a feast with the people you care about most is the best way to celebrate anything. Period.
Forget about the Christmas lights, music and gifts for now. There’s plenty of time to do all that stuff after November. I’m not decorating until after November 28th, my youngest son’s birthday.
So, who’s with me? Let’s take back Thanksgiving! Take the pledge.
Or are you too chicken?
