Don’t do it!
You did NOT get a new dog!?
These are a few of the comments I’ve received from friends in the past few weeks when they found out we were getting a new puppy.
You see, we already have two Siberian Huskies. Two very stubborn, set in their ways Siberian Huskies.
Why bring in a new puppy to the mix? Because Kona is almost 12, and Kailua is 9. They’re eating senior food now. And though they are happy and healthy as can be, we thought now would be a good time to get a little guy.
If anything ever happened to Kona, Kailua would have a super hard time. (And so would we.) Plus, as the lead dog of the house, we wanted Kona to teach the new pup a few things about life.
So, two Fridays ago, we got Hana. She’s an Alaskan husky / Eurohound mix, bred for speed. (Yes. Our snow dogs have Hawaiian names.)
The only thing missing is the sled.
The first couple of nights were tough and included a walk at 2:00am, but things are getting easier. Kona is fairly indifferent because he is the lead dog. Kailua is still establishing with Hana that he is above her. They’ll get there. That’s the beauty of pack dogs. They figure things out for themselves.
And so will we. My husband has already figured out a way to walk the three of them at once without getting dragged in three different directions. (That’s no small feat with 3 huskies!)
Me? I’m getting used to working in my home office with a puppy constantly interrupting me and peeing on the rug while I’m trying to meet with a client.
I also ask “Do you need to go potty?” a lot these days. To my kids and my dogs.
It’s a little crazy over here, but at least I finally have another female in the house.
