Christmas Music Memories

jennifer · December 20, 2010 ·

Music has always been an important part of my life. To this day, I can’t do much of anything without music in the background. I remember my dad introducing me to different styles of music at a young age. He always seemed to have a story to go along with the songs he played, which may explain why I relate a lot of my memories to music.
At this time of year, it’s hard to go to a store or turn on the radio without hearing Christmas music. To me, though, it doesn’t quite seem like Christmas until I hear “Christmas Wrapping” by the Waitresses or “Father Christmas” by the Kinks. These are the songs my dad played (and still does) each Christmas while my family decorated the tree.
This year, I decided to download some music to my iPod so I could start some memories with my two boys. I chose some of my most memorable Christmas tunes, found a few songs from my favorite bands and added the classic songs sung by some amazing singers.
Here’s my Christmas music playlist:
“Don’t Shoot Me Santa” ~ The Killers
“Christmas Wrapping” ~ The Waitresses
“Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” ~ U2
“Father Christmas” ~ The Kinks
“Last Christmas” ~ Wham!
“Happy Xmas (War is Over)” ~ John Lennon
“Frosty the Snowman” ~ Ella Fitzgerald
“Jingle Bells” ~ Frank Sinatra
“Baby, It’s Cold Outside” ~ Dean Martin
“Christmas Time is Here” ~ Barry Gordon (from Peanuts)
“Santa Claus is Coming to Town” ~ Bruce Springsteen
“Santa Baby” ~ Eartha Kitt
“I Believe in Father Christmas” ~ Greg Lake
“Donde Esta Santa Claus?” ~ Guster
“I Saw Three Ships” ~ Sting
So far, the boys seem to like the mix. G giggles when he hears The Kinks sing about leaving toys for the “little rich boys,” and Biz loves singing about “Fosty” the snowman. I’m curious to see which songs become their favorites.
Until then, here’s to Christmas memories past, present and future. And timeless music that brings it all back.
